How a TruGlide Roll-Up Garage Door Is Built
Every TruGlide door starts as a coil of 26 gauge steel, roughly .017" thick. That steel is roll-formed into interlocking slats, each one designed to nest into the slat above and below so the curtain stays rigid across the full width of the opening while still coiling tightly overhead. The finish is a baked-on paint system applied before forming, which means the color is bonded to the steel rather than sprayed on after assembly.
The curtain rides in galvanized steel guides fastened to the jambs on each side of the opening. At the top, the curtain wraps a barrel carried by stamped steel drums with radial ball bearings. Inside the barrel, a torsion spring is wound to counterbalance the weight of the curtain so a 10x10 door lifts with one hand. Because the entire assembly lives above the opening, nothing extends back into the building — no horizontal tracks, no ceiling-mounted rails, no lost storage space.

Sizing, Headroom, and Sideroom
Roll-up doors are ordered by the finished opening size, not the curtain size. Measure the width and height of the finished rough opening at three points each and use the smallest measurement. A 10x10 door means a 10' wide by 10' tall opening — the curtain and guides are sized to cover it with the correct overlap.
Above the opening you need clear headroom for the coil and mounting brackets. Plan on roughly 12" to 18" depending on door height — taller doors coil into a larger diameter and need more room. On each side, allow 6" to 8" of flat, plumb jamb surface for the guides. If your building has trusses, purlins, lighting, or conduit running through that space, relocate them before installation day.
Buildings with less than 8' of interior clearance need extra attention: the coil may sit lower than expected and interfere with lights or storage. Manual, Chain Hoist, or Electric Opener
Smaller doors — generally up to about 10' wide — operate comfortably by hand. The torsion spring carries the curtain weight, so lifting is a single smooth motion with the pull rope or lift handle.
Larger or taller doors are usually specified with a chain hoist. The hoist gears the lift down so one person can raise a 16' wide curtain without strain, and it holds position anywhere in the travel, which is useful for ventilation.
Electric operators are available for any door where powered operation makes sense — high-cycle shops, drive-through bays, or anywhere hands are usually full. The motor can be mounted on either the right-hand or left-hand side of the opening, so wall obstructions and outlet locations are rarely a problem. When an electric opener is installed, the chain hoist is not installed; the opener takes its place.
