Choosing the Right Size for a Shed
Shed doors are ordered by the finished opening, not by the curtain. A 6x6 door covers a 6' wide by 6' tall finished rough opening. Measure the width and the height at three points each — top, middle, bottom for width; left, center, right for height — and order to the smallest number. Sheds settle and framing moves, so the three measurements often differ by half an inch or more.
What goes through the door drives the size. A 3' to 4' wide door handles hand tools, bikes, and garden gear. A 5' to 6' door takes a push mower, wheelbarrow, or snowblower without turning them sideways. Anything with a seat — a riding mower, a UTV, a compact tractor — wants 8' or wider, and you want the height to clear the roll bar or ROPS, which usually means 7' minimum.

Framing a Shed Opening for a Roll-Up Door
Sheds are where clearance problems show up most often, simply because the walls are short. Above the opening you need roughly 12" to 18" of clear headroom for the coil and mounting brackets. On a shed with 8' walls and a 7' tall door, that space is tight — check for rafters, collar ties, and light fixtures before you commit to a door height.
On each side, leave 6" to 8" of flat, plumb jamb for the guides to fasten to. Trim, corner boards, and hinges from an old swing door all eat into that space. The jamb surface should be solid framing, not sheathing alone — the guides carry the curtain load every cycle.
The header matters too. It has to carry both the roof load and the weight of the coiled door, which for a small shed door is modest but not zero. A doubled 2x header sized for the span is typical on wood-framed sheds.
